PhD in Computational Biology & Bioinformatics

Program Principles & Goals

The PhD Program in Computational Biology & Bioinformatics (CBB) is an integrative, multi-disciplinary training program that encompasses the study of biology using computational and quantitative methods. In and out of the classroom, students learn to apply the tools of statistics, mathematics, computer science and informatics to biological problems. The vibrant and innovative Duke research in these fields provides exciting interactions between biological and computational scientists. Because the Program in Computational Biology & Bioinformatics is based in the Duke Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy, it offers a unique opportunity for students to become one of tomorrow's leaders in genome sciences.

In both formal and informal settings, Computational Biology & Bioinformatics students interact with over 40 faculty whose research includes:

  • computational and comparative genomics
  • systems biology
  • genome technology
  • machine learning, data mining and algorithmic approaches to biological problems
  • structural genomics
  • computational protein design and folding

Formerly the PhD Program in Bioinformatics & Genome Technology, Computational Biology & Bioinformatics was approved by the Duke Board of Trustees because the new name better reflects the activities and interests of the current students and faculty of the program. The new name is representative of the burgeoning field of computational biology - encompassing the study of biology using computational methods, including statistics, mathematics, computer science and informatics - and is seen as critical in the search for biomedical research discoveries.

Computational Biology & Bioinformatics students are educated and mentored in classes, labs and research projects with faculty from multiple departments and disciplines, spanning the biological and computational disciplines, in both medical and non-medical departments.
